The Story of Jaipur Living Rugs

As a designer, when I begin to decorate or redecorate a room, the first thing I do is choose a rug. To me, a rug serves as the anchor to a room. Jaipur Living Rugs, with its abundance of styles, gorgeous designs, and impeccable craftsmanship, coupled with their fine business philosophy and social contribution puts them at the top of my list when sourcing rugs.

Believing in the integrity and the unmatched quality of handmade, Nand Kishore Chaudhary (known as NKC) founded the idea of Jaipur rugs in 1978 working beside 9 artisans on two looms. He began his business built on the principle of dignity, employing “untouchables” and undermining centuries-old practices that had shunned the poor, women and artists. The average hand-knotted rug takes 240 days to make. Today, in the age of mass production, the ancient art of rug weaving is in danger of instinction. Each time I touch one of these fine rugs, however, I understand and feel the unmatched quality that machines can’t accomplish. I also reflect on the 4,000 artisans in over 600 villages that patiently weave these rugs and in return are provided with a livable wage, access to health care, leadership education and opportunities for personal growth and development. “We were built to make life beautiful.”- Nand Kishore Chaudhary, founder.

Abandoned by her husband, Kamli Devi always loved the craft of weaving but the earnings were not enough to feed her and her four children. She began working with Jaipur Rugs Foundation and learned she could participate in their Alternative Education Programme. Today she owns her own home and all of her children are completing their high school degrees respectively. “Let goodness, fairness, and most importantly love prevail in business; profits will follow. -Nand Kishore Chaudhary, founder.

Today, Jaipur Living is run by NKC’s two daughters Asha Chaudhary (CEO) and her sister Archana Chaudhary (COO). They continue to expand on their father’s vision, driving more awareness of their handmade products as well as celebrating new construction innovation and the integrity of artisans. Removing the middleman, they ensure quality and consistency by continuing to connect with their artisan partners through a common thread of love and compassion.

Next time you are in town, I invite you to stop in to see the beauty and feel the luxury of these amazing, hand-knotted works of art for yourself. I am honored and proud to have Jaipur Living be part of my Arrange story.
