Mudroom Musts

As the colder months settle in, our mudrooms shift into high gear, becoming the workhorse entryway that keeps the rest of our home clean and organized. Whether you’re designing a dedicated mudroom or a mudroom/laundry room combo, these essentials will make sure this space is ready to handle all the coats, hats, and snowy boots coming its way. Here are some must-haves and a few creative ideas for making your mudroom both practical and inviting:

1. A Bench with Storage to Slip On (and Off) Boots

- Nothing beats having a sturdy bench where you can comfortably sit to pull on winter boots. A bench with built-in storage is even better. A client of mine came up with the idea of running a pull-out drawer underneath the seat for gloves, hats, and mittens. This keeps everything neatly tucked away yet close at hand and there is still room underneath for shoes and boots. I love it!

2. Drawers and Bins for Winter Accessories

- Designate a drawer for all those easy-to-lose winter accessories. With dividers, you can create separate spaces for gloves, hats, and scarves, so everything has a spot and is ready when you need it.

3. Ample Hooks for Heavy Coats and Ski Gear

- Invest in plenty of hooks—durable ones that can handle heavy winter coats, bags, and even ski gear. This keeps things off the floor, saves space, and makes it easy for everyone to grab what they need on their way out.

4. A Boot Dryer for Quick Turnaround

- A dedicated boot dryer can be a lifesaver on those extra-snowy days. It not only dries boots quickly, making them ready for the next wear, but also helps them last longer by preventing moisture damage.

5. Durable, Easy-to-Clean Flooring

- In these high-traffic areas, tile flooring is hands-down the best choice. It’s moisture-resistant, easy to clean, and can withstand the wear that hardwood simply can’t in winter conditions. Plus, the tiles add a lovely visual texture to the space.

6. Surfaces That Can Handle It All

- Choose easy-to-clean surfaces for walls and countertops, so they can take a beating and still look good. I like to use washable, moisture-resistant paint that stands up to scrapes and spills and can be easily wiped down.

7. A Tray to Contain Muddy Boots and Snowy Shoes

- A waterproof boot tray is a must for containing wet, muddy boots. I’m a fan of the beautiful copper boot trays from Garnet Hill—they’re as functional as they are stylish, and they keep all that water and dirt from spreading across the room.

8. A Few Unique Touches for Winter Ease:

- Pet-Washing Station: If space allows, a mini washing station for muddy paws can be a lifesaver for dog owners.

- Overhead Storage: High shelves provide a perfect spot for storing off-season items or keeping extra supplies neatly stashed away.

- Heated Floors: This is the ultimate winter treat! Heated floors help dry gear faster and keep the space cozy.

- Built-In Shoe Rack: Keeps shoes organized, off the floor, and ready for quick changes.

- Drying Rack for Small Gear: A wall-mounted drying rack can hold gloves, hats, and any other items that need a little air-drying after a day out in the snow.

Adding a few of these functional pieces to your mudroom can make winter days smoother and a warm, welcoming spot in your home. What are some of your mudroom must-haves?
