Transitioning to Autumn/Fall Interior with Decorating Tips for Central Oregon

As the days get shorter and the air gets a bit crisper here in Central Oregon, I find myself getting excited about the cozy vibes of fall. If you’re like me, you love using this time of year to refresh your home. Whether you're sprucing up your main residence or adding a touch of autumn to your second home in Bend, these decorating tips can help you bring that lovely fall feeling indoors.

1. Embrace Earthy Tones

Autumn is all about rich, earthy colors that mimic the changing leaves outside. I recommend incorporating warm hues like burnt orange, mossy green, and soft browns. Swapping out your throw pillows, blankets, and even a few accent pieces like vases or candles in these colors can make a big impact, creating that warm, cozy feel we all crave this time of year.

2. Bring Nature Indoors

One of my favorite ways to celebrate fall is by decorating with natural elements from our own backyard here in Central Oregon. Try filling a rustic bowl with pinecones, arranging dried branches in a vase, or creating a centerpiece with pumpkins and gourds. You’ll find it’s easy to bring the outside in, and it adds an effortless seasonal charm.

3. Cozy Textiles

Fall is the season for soft, cozy textures, so why not layer up? Think thick-knit blankets, wool throws, and textured pillows that you can cozy up with on a chilly evening. Adding a new, warm area rug can also help make a room feel more inviting. It doesn’t have to be big. Maybe a change to an entry rug or kitchen.

4. Focus on Lighting

Since the days get shorter, it’s essential to make the most of your indoor lighting. I like to add warm-toned bulbs and use table lamps, and candles, or  Placing a few candles in your living room or bedroom can also bring a lovely ambiance—perfect for those cozy autumn nights at home.

5. Layer Up Your Bedding

When fall arrives, I love switching out my lighter summer bedding for something a bit warmer. Try adding flannel sheets! I know many of you think flannel gets too hot but the particular brand  I recommend doesn’t!  I promise. Organic, soft, and breathable. I have only received positive feedback with many clients coming back for more. Send me a message or call if you want to hear more about them. They are the softest flannel sheets I have found and they don’t pill.

A chunky knit throw or a heavier duvet are also great layering ideas for those crisp Central Oregon nights. Not only does it make your bedroom feel cozier, but it also adds a beautiful layer of texture and warmth.

6. Add Seasonal Scents

Nothing says Fall like woodsy, warm scents. Think amber, oak, cinnamon, apple, kk pear and cranberry. Most of you know that my favorite scented candles are by Jack Be Nimble which I carried in my shop.  They can now be found locally at Wild Petals Bend. If you are not local, you can also order them directly online at jackbenimblecandles.com. For this time of year try his Harvest, Cozy, or Woodland scented candles. You will be addicted! I prefer the glow of candles but as an alternative, diffusers are also available in the same scents. I’ll even simmer a pot with apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves for a natural and small detail, but it can make a big difference in creating that perfect autumn atmosphere.

7. Cook Up Some Soup!

Along with fall candles, a hearty pot of soup simmering on the stove is another way to welcome in the autumn season.

One of my favorite recipes is the White Bean, Sausage & Spinach Soup from one of  Danielle Kartes's cookbooks called Rustic Joyful Food. I made a big pot last Sunday and have been eating it all week!

8. Spruce Up Your Entryway

The entryway sets the tone for your home, so give it a seasonal touch. Try placing a thicker outdoor mat at the door and adding a collection of pumpkins, gourds, potted mums, or fall plants. Small changes can make your entryway feel warm and inviting as guests walk through the door.

Embracing the autumn season in your home doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few small changes, you can create a cozy, welcoming space that reflects the beauty of Central Oregon this time of year.
